Desagradable: Historias africanas sobre la vida silvestre, la guerra y el nacimiento de la gestión holística

Descripción

In the wild heart of Africa, one man’s fight to save the land nearly cost him everything.

In the late 1950s, Allan Savory was a young biologist in a corner of Southern Africa where the bush reverberated with trumpeting elephants, bellowing hippos, and the politics were as dangerous as the wildlife. Over the next three decades, he would become a soldier and tracker in a brutal civil war, a member of Parliament fighting to end it, and an exiled ecologist challenging the world’s most sacred environmental beliefs.

Savory’s insistence that livestock—not their removal—could heal degraded land sparked both breakthroughs and outrage. Branded a heretic, pursued by political enemies, and scarred by personal loss, he pressed on, convinced the future of humanity depended on restoring our life-supporting habitat.

UnSavory is the untold story behind Holistic Management—woven through encounters with man-eating lions, political betrayal, and a lifelong battle with the “common sense” that destroys the natural world. It is a front-row seat to Southern Africa’s turbulent history and one man’s stubborn, improbable quest to change the fate of the earth.

The Textbook

Holistic Management: A Commonsense Revolution to Restore Our Environment, Third Edition (2016), covers the foundations of Holistic Management in detail and explains the reasoning behind the various planning procedures that appear in the Handbook. The Textbook gives an overview of all the planning and monitoring procedures listed in the Holistic Management framework, including policy and research.  It expresses the “Why” of Holistic Management – why it matters, why it is essential for solving so many of the world’s most pressing problems, and why you should care.

The Handbook

The Holistic Management Handbook: Regenerating Your Land and Growing Your Profits, Third Edition (2019), is the Holistic Management “How To” book for land managers. It explains in step-by-step detail how to create your holistic financial plan, grazing plan, land (infrastructure) plan, and to complete your ecological monitoring. It was designed as a companion to the textbook. We recommend not risking resources on the information in the Handbook without reading the textbook, and also do not advise managing your operation from the advice in the textbook without mastering the details explained in this one.
